Campus life includes athletics, art, outdoor activities and a spectacular view of the aurora borealis.

Activities and Recreation

Don’t just experience an Alaskan classroom, experience Alaska! Alaska has plenty of activities to offer the most avid adventurer, sportsman or History Channel fan.

Sports:
Sports fans can see college hockey played where it was meant to be played, in the ice. College hockey and basketball fans can spend nights watching top college athletes compete on the ice and on the court.  

Outdoors:
When it comes to outdoor activities, it doesn’t get any better than Alaska. Students can enjoy the most breathtaking scenery on the planet while hiking, dog mushing, skiing, wildlife watching, kayaking, rafting, camping, fishing, hunting, biking and whale watching. Anchorage has 200 miles of bike trails ready to ride. Alaska is home to more than 3,000 rivers and over 3 million lakes. The largest, Lake Iliamna, encompasses over 1,000 square miles. Denali National Park is a popular destination for fishing and kayaking on the Nenana River. The more adventurous students can raft alongside icebergs broken off of nearby glaciers.

The Arts:
Alaska has several performing arts theaters and dance companies that offer performances year-round. For those wanting an authentic Alaskan cultural experience, various indigenous groups present their special talents and distinct styles of carving or weaving. Students in Alaska can experience performances of traditional music and dance, and see numerous examples of both ancient and modern Native art in villages, galleries, museums and cultural centers.

Historical Sites:
There are hundreds of memorials and museums like the Anchorage Museum and Rasmussen Center that preserve the ancient cultures and traditions of native and contemporary Alaskans. The Alutiiq Museum & Archaeological Repository presents the prehistoric and historic cultural traditions of the Alutiiq people. At the Alaska Native Heritage Center students can hear the songs and stories; see the dancers; experience the traditions, discover the ways of yesterday while touring actual Native village sites.
